The Chlamydia Home Test Kit is a test kit that you can use at home. It will determine whether you have contracted chlamydia from practicing unsafe sex.

What is the Chlamydia Home Test Kit?

The Chlamydia Home Test Kit is a self-testing method for detecting the chlamydia infection.

Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection (also known as an STI). It is passed from person to person through bacteria in bodily fluids.

Chlamydia often shows no physical symptoms and is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections. Unlike some STIs, chlamydia is treatable with antibiotics.

Sexually transmitted infections are spread through unprotected sexual contact. Chlamydia may be passed through semen, pre-ejaculate and vaginal fluid by unprotected vaginal, anal, and oral sex.

It is recommended that those who are sexually active and not in a monogamous relationship have regular STI examinations. The only way to have an accurate status of your sexual health is to be medically tested.

If you think you may have come into contact with chlamydia or are presenting symptoms of the infection, it is advised that you take a test as soon as possible to ensure treatment can be started promptly. If you are uncomfortable or unable to visit a sexual health clinic, STI test kits can be issued to make testing at home discreet and convenient.

The Chlamydia Home Test Kit is a private and fast method of testing. It allows you to get results at home without having to visit a GUM or sexual health clinic.

Test results will be available 2 to 3 days of sending the samples.

We do not issue any products to people under 18 years old.

How it works

The Chlamydia Home Test Kit is a simple and accessible method for testing for chlamydia infection. The self-test kit contains an information leaflet, a request form, a sample collection device container, and a secure Freepost mailer.

Once you receive your kit, you will need to provide a sample. For women, a sample consists of a vaginal swab test, and for men, a urine sample is required.

The test is then sent for analysis to our partner lab, The Doctors Laboratory. Results are available after 2 to 3 days of sending the samples.

When your results have been processed, one of our Pharmacy Assistants will notify you of your results. We will contact you by phone to give you your result, whether it is positive or negative. If we are unable to contact you by phone, we will leave you a voicemail asking you to call us back at your convenience.

Before you use it

If you suspect you may have chlamydia, it is important that you are tested as soon as it’s possible. An undetected STI may have harmful, long-lasting effects if left untreated. Complications from untreated chlamydia include pelvic inflammatory disease (also known as PID), testicular infections and infertility.

It is possible for mothers who have chlamydia to pass the infection onto a newborn during birth. A child born with chlamydia often show signs of infection in the eye (conjunctivitis). This can be very dangerous for a newborn as it has the potential to result in permanent damage. Risks like this can be minimised if the infection is treated early.

If you suspect that you have been exposed to chlamydia, it is important that you wait at least two weeks before being tested. The infection can be undetectable for the first two weeks following exposure.

Please note that the accuracy of your results may be affected if you do not read and follow the sampling instructions provided.

It is always important to take precautions when regarding sexual health. Practising safe sex can significantly reduce the risk of contracting or spreading a sexually transmitted infection. Using barrier protection methods such as male or female condoms may significantly reduce the risk of contracting an STI.

Dosage Instructions

For Female test sampling:

  1. Wash hands with soap and water. Ensure hands are clean and dry before taking a sample.
  2. Twist the cap to break the seal of the swab. Do not use if seal is broken or damaged. Pull the cap with attached swab from the tube. Do not touch the tip or lay the swab down. If the swab tip comes into contact with a surface or your hands, discard the swab and request a new one.
  3. Hold the swab by the cap so the tip is pointing towards you.
  4. With your other hand, gently spread the skin on the outside of the vagina. Insert tip of the swab into the vaginal opening. Point the tip toward your lower back and relax your muscles.
  5. Slide the swab no more than two inches into the vagina. If the swab does not slide easily, gently rotate the swab as you push. If it is still difficult, do not attempt to continue. Make sure the swab touches the walls of the vagina so that moisture is absorbed by the swab.
  6. Rotate the swab for 10-15 seconds.
  7. Withdraw the swab without touching the skin. Place the swab in the tube and cap securely.
  8. After collection, wash hands with soap and water. Rinse and dry.
  9. Label the swab clearly with your full name and date of birth.
  10. Place the swab in the plastic reseal bag provided and place in the post-paid, pre-addressed envelope, together with your request form.

For Male test sampling:

  1. Wash hands with soap and water. Ensure hands are clean and dry before taking a sample.
  2. Complete the enclosed request form with your details. Write your full name and date of birth on the urine label supplied in the pack. Please note that unlabeled samples cannot be processed.
  3. Affix the label by placing the tube in the middle of the label and wrapping the label around the tube, as shown in the instruction leaflet.
  4. Squeeze the sides of the urine collection box to expand it. The box has a plastic lining inside to contain the urine. Please take care not to damage or puncture the lining.
  5. Pass the first part of your urine into the collection box until it is half full. Pass the rest into the toilet.
  6. Unscrew the lid of the sample tube.
  7. Very carefully, fill the sample tube from the urine collection box, taking care not to get liquid on the outer of the sample bottle. Discard any remaining urine and dispose of the collection box.
  8. Screw the lid on the sample tube tightly.
  9. Wrap the label around the sample tube. Place the tube into the protective packing wallet and close firmly.
  10. Place the completed form and the urine sample into the Test Kit Box. Seal the Test Kit Box using the security sticker provided. Place the Test Kit Box into the pre-addressed mailer.
